Natal
At Sao Goncalo airport, the initial procedures were fast. Customs and Immigration were correct and kind. A nice handling agent named Jose Orlando Nunes Da Silva (www.lideraviacao.com.br) helped us for free to make a copy of the passport and a General Declaration form (that I have left at the Severino Lopes airfield).
So once I tried to take what I needed from the airplane and reached the terminal, soon I was free.
Outside, Amanda and Bruno were waiting for me. They drove me to a beautiful hotel at the beach between Natal and a protected natural park. That hotel was provided thanks to Ricardo, so I feel really happy. Michelle (Amanda´s mother) is the one that leaders the organization created to cocoon me. Behind that organization is my friend and RV4 owner, Guillermo Cabarcos and his wife Luiza ( the mother or Michelle).
Next day, early, I met Jose Almir, the owner of SLBX airfield, south of Natal.
Severino Lopes airfield is a dirt runway one, plenty of RVs (mainly RV10)
Almir showed me the planes and its aerodrome. But the fantastic thing is the project. A huge ¨Condominio¨ is about to be built and the runway to be a concrete one, with around 1200 m length.
Condominio is an airport where your own home sits on top of your own hangar. A true dream for pilots !!! . That is very popular in USA, and here, in Brasil, more and more are being built.
Almir is also a experimental builder. He has built a Brasilian design, parasol wing and Rotax powered engine experimental aircraft. That plane Kolb Flyer (www.flyer.com.br) is fast !. Of course negative flaps are for a good help.
So we climbed in it and I was converted into his aircraft First Pilot. He was courageous to let me taxi, take off, fly and land. I didn´t say no !
We flew from Severino Lopes to Sao Goncalo, were the RV8 was waiting for me.
Brasil has a well established procedure for foreiners. To tell the thruth, it is necessary to provide many many documents, before getting the clearance but it is fine.
Then, the Authority ( ANAC) provides a clearance to land at an international or entry airport. Then, before 24 hours, it is necessary that the aircraft also clears customs and once it is done, one can fly to any other brasilian airport.
That was the procedure to be undergone the 25th.
But it takes really long before being cleared to take off again. I think that it took around five hours for the whole process !
TV was expected to be waiting for us when we returned with both aircraft at Severino Lopes. But clearing the aeroplane took more than expected so we had to wait until February the 26 th for it.
The evening I met Judith and Lena. Both are scientists for the Natal University, atmosphere science department.
We talked about how to gather data for the study. Natal University cooperates with Granada University for our project Absorbing Aerosol Monitoring over Remotes Regions. It is interesting to know that Sahara desert sand is carried by the winds into Amazonas, where it feeds the plants of the forest providing them with minerals.
Of course, a shrimps dinner was more than adequate to understand the physics of Atmosphere.
Shrimps are the Natal speciality. They are called Camarons, a name that comes from my birth country, Cameroon.
Once I understood the physics (it was necassary to add a good dessert), I was able to finally go to the hotel where I arrived at midnight.
A short night because at 0520 I had to be ready again at the hotel gate to return to Severino Lopes, for T.V. news and newspapers.
At 0600 we arrived at the airport and started the process. I speak no portuguese, so I just spoke in spanish, that is very close.
I had also to fly around 10 minutes, for them.
A slow roll was performed at the end, just as salute for the TV. Crew. You can see the report at :
It was finally time for lunch and I was already exhausted.
I met many pilots and we chatted quite a long time.
Finally I returned to my room and was able to start writing my ¨reports¨ and downloading the files from the cameras, data logger, aethalometer and other devices. New technologies are nice but they require their time to be processed.
Internet in my room is really poor. A single email can take 5 to 10 minutes to be sent. Fortunaly, at the restaurant area it is fast, so now I can breath !.
Natal is a nice city. Always windy and humid. However it seems that it doesn´t rain so much.
Beaches are long…. I have been told that this one is 500 kilometers long.
I will check it on my way to Belem.
Natal means Birth. The symbol of the city are the Three Kings (Reyes Magos). Of course, I am talking about Jesus Christ birth !.
I miss not having time to walk around and see more, but I am happy compared to the 1998 and 2001 flights. Now, I have more time to contact the people. It is being a beautiful experience.
