Bubbles in the sea

Bubbles in the sea

I am flying over the hot ocean. Humidity is high and the clouds start popping up, like bubbles.

But the fact is that I am not flying, just sitting in front of my screen and trying to imagine that ocean and how to deal with it. Also trying to imagine any situation relative to the second part of Skypolaris.

The time is running fast and my head gears are spinning faster and faster.

So many subjects to deal with… really crasy.

Since my return into Madrid, I can say that the relationship with the Spanish Polar Committee has changed a lot.

Now his Secretary is working hard to have everything ready and cleared. I feel really glad on that, so let me share the news with you.

I am happy to know that France has also approved their support in Antarctica.

Two main airfields are there, one called Concordia, the other one Durmont D´Urville. Only problem is that their runways are snow ones and skis are necessary for the aircrafts.

As you know, I wondered to have my RV donned with skis, but finally, the draggy belly tank added to the skis one, would not help.

The destination is Mario Zucchelli. Should I divert somewhere, Mc Murdo would be first choice if close to Mario Zucchelli (no US support doesn´t mean no landing, as Antartica is not the property of anybody).

But Durmont D´Urville could be a good alternate.

Landing over snow with wheels is not a good idea, but it is better to land there than to land anywhere else.

Would I have the bad need to divert there, I would call them far in advance and request some vehicles to drive along, forth and back some 500 meters, to have a somehow more compacted area to land and avoid my airplane to flip over.

Of course, I will not take off from Tasmania if I think that a diversion is necessary !

Now that everything look nicer, I just need sponsorship.

Although the doors are opened, there is still not a single enterprise to confirm their support to the flight. And that is not easy to manage! If anyone of you can find someone interested in the project, that should be good news !

Those days I have been working on the RV.

I have installed USB chargers and removed the portable ones I had at the beginning.

Also I have installed a new landing light and added a taxi light. My previous installation was providing a really narrow beam that was not nice for landing.

The new light is installed at the front bottom of the fuselage. I hope that it will fulfill my needs !

Also I am designing and building a new support for my tail video camera. In hhis coming flight,  the camera will be USB fed by the aircraft electrical system, so I hope no longer to have limits of video control during long flights.

I am also installing a second heat muff, to have a stronger heating inside the aircraft.

However I am not quite sure how to proceed…

The fresh air supply is provided by a two inches tube.

That air is heated by a heat muff installed around the exhaust number three, and then enters the cockpit also through a two inches hole.

I will have the second heat muff installed on exhaust number four.

I will not drill another hole in the firewall so the options are two:

Have the heat muffs installed parallel or have them installed in series.

I think, after some study, that I will get hotter air using the parallel installation, because of the lower air flow through each muff.

Your expertise is welcome !!!

So, as you see, those flights are not piece of cake. The fun is everywhere !

Bubbles in the sea or in my head?

Bonjour Michel,
I suppose you already had a look at VAF :

There does not seem to be a definitive answer to you question about having the heat muffs in series or in parallel. It seems though that having them in series will not give much more heat.
Good luck

Dear Michel,
2 hoses forcing hot air through one firewall hole increases the airflow, but not proportionally. I would use a Y-tube connetor to pick up both hoses from the heat muffs and carry the other end through the firewall flange, or the flap-box, respectively. So, the air may get hotter, which is desired to keep you warm, right? Inside the cabin behind the firewall you can either distribute the hot air with hoses or just let it flow in sttraight through the flap-box. I didn’t see your installation as it is.

Did you also consider to carry an external boost battery for use in extreme cold waether, such as a light weight lithium battery, to start the engine in the antarctic?
