Windsor, Ontario Canada

The Sky Polaris flight has successfully avoided landing anywhere in the USA and is now in Windsor, Canada, just across the river from Detroit, USA. I am sure that Michel can SEE the USA from his room near the airport. I hope that is allowed.

Michel departed Freeport, Grand Bahamas Island at 1358z, where it was 81 degrees F (28 C), flew non-stop for 1,100 miles (1,770 km) for 9.5 hours and final landed in Windsor where it was 32 degrees F (0 C). Given that Michel had departed Freeport with just light clothing, he was freezing when he finally landed. He cleared customs with no problem and was handed a hot cup of coffee to warm up.

There are few light aircraft that can fly those long distances. What would be the situation if Michel’s RV-8 could NOT fly so far as to avoid the USA? The answer is that he would still be in Mexico.  But due to Michel’s abilities, he was able to build an airplane that can cross oceans and continents.

I was one of the Canadian Border Services Officers (Customs) who greeted Michel when he landed at the Windsor airport. To say he was freezing when he landed was putting it mildly. He was shaking so badly that he could hardly shake our hands. We were concerned for him. All we could do was get him indoors as quickly as possible. And then he told us he was heading to the North Pole! My partner and I then dubbed him “The worlds most interesting man”. Good Luck Michael! Our thoughts are with you.

Been a long time Michel. Ashamed that my government would not allow you in. I still remember our stay with you in Spain and our adventures in your Kitfox. My RV-8 is now 14 years old and still flying fine. Certainly is a beautiful airplane isn’t it. Beats the Kitfox. I just finished a SeaRey amphib with a 914. May you have a safe journey. Fair winds and following seas.

TOM: I’m not related with the adventure but I think I can say “THANK YOU FOR YOUR WARM WELCOME” to Michel and specially for your first hand(cold one), impression about Michel’s arrival. I bet you made the difference in Michel’s state of mind finding such good people in Canada.
MICHAEL ROBINS: Do not be ashamed, we have morons in our country as well. You have a great country.
DON PEARSALL: I bet you were through a very difficult moment as well so, thank you again to keep us informed. Amazing job.

Michel,
Please let me apologize for the difficulties with your visit to the USA. It is not the way we wish our friends to find us.
At some point perhaps the EAA can help us understand what happened and how to ensure that it does not happen
that way again.
Wishing you CAVU with following winds,
John
